He said: "The nearer you are to the North Sea the worst it will be and all of Essex is 20 miles from the North Sea.
"This could be a three to four week cold spell and something we have not seen since December 2010.
"They, at the Met Office, are saying this is going to be a severe event.
"We could get to low temperatures we have not seen for a very long time."
Mr Defty believes, if the weather behaves as the Met Office has predicted then we will have a combination of conditions which could cause mayhem.
He added: "It was 1987 the last time these exact conditions came together.

The weather is a bit cold.
It sometimes is a bit cold in England because the country is quite far north.
It's not unusual for there to be snow and freezing temperatures, nor is it unusual for there to be anecdotes aplenty about surviving the conditions.
I was in Canada over Christmas, in the Province of Alberta. In a two week period the temperature was never warmer than -25 degrees and on one day it hit -38 degrees. Canadians just get on with it. Everything is still open - the roads, the shopping malls, the restaurants. Public transport runs normally and the airport at Calgary is not disrupted in any way.
MINUS THIRTY EIGHT ladies and gents.
Get some backbone and stop complaining.

Talking of weird weather, a sign of spring round here used to be rain turning into snow about a yard above the ground - the earth was so cold due to months of sub-0 temps that despite the +6 air on the day, it was freezing anything that came close enough.
This hasn't happened in years now of course.

Odd weather in my bit of York.
Heavy snow alternating with temperatures high enough to melt it quickly.
Went to bed last night, and it was snowing. Got up and it had all gone.
It's just finished snowing again, and it's back.
It's like being magically transported to a different country every couple of hours.
